Welcome to Psychology Practice Unfoldings

“I would love to live like a river, carried by the surprise of its' own unfolding.”  John O'Donohue.

What are you looking for?

Sometimes, you reach a point in your life where you feel 'stuck,' so to speak. Whether it's due to work, health, relationships, or personal issues. You may wish to experience more peace and balance or seek a deeper sense of purpose. Finding the right help can be challenging, and perhaps you realize that you've been dealing with this for longer than you'd prefer.

Taking the step to contact me is your first move toward change. As a psychologist, I can work with you to understand your situation and struggles to help you reconnect with yourself. This way, you can rediscover support and balance, ultimately enabling you to live life to the fullest.

My Vision

My name is Nicole Flinterman, and I work as a psychologist in my own practice. I work with methodologies that resonate with me and I believe can assist you. I, too, have experienced the unpredictability of life and its constant flux. Trusting yourself during challenging times can indeed be daunting. Inner obstacles like intense emotions, mental clutter, a harsh inner critic, or lack of self-assurance might hinder this. External circumstances, such as declining health, work challenges, or relationship issues, can suddenly become overwhelming.

These circumstances sometimes lead us to behave in ways that don't align with our true desires, distancing us from relationships that could aid our progress and further disconnecting us from a fulfilling life.

Mindfulness introduced me to the joy, ease, and profound connection that arises from fully embracing my life - finding joy in 'letting life unfold.' It allowed me to perceive more clearly what I possessed, valued, and what offered support. This understanding was irrespective of circumstances but influenced by how I interpreted them.

I firmly believe that through mindfulness-based practices, it's possible to rediscover a profound and meaningful connection with oneself, others, to lighten the load of life, and to be more attuned to the world around us.

Methods

The primary methodologies I utilize are Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), and EMDR for trauma treatment. In couples therapy, I integrate Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples and iBCT.

Foundational elements of mindfulness and self-compassion play a significant role in my approach. Additionally, I incorporate various tools from other theoretical frameworks, including polyvagal theory, compassionate interviewing, positive psychology, solution-focused therapy, schema therapy, and family constellations.

  • I conduct therapy sessions in both English and Spanish (fluent in both languages)

  • I offer online therapy or a hybrid approach blending online and face-to-face sessions

What are you looking for?

Individual Therapy

As a psychologist in my private practice, I work with methodologies that I feel passionate about. I primarily utilize Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy, and EMDR. These methodologies are aimed at helping you increase your psychological flexibility, regain control of your life, and pursue activities that hold significant importance to you. By doing so, you will experience more peace and happiness in your life once again.

Relationship Therapy

Sometimes, you encounter challenges in your relationship. We often believe that relationships should naturally flourish after falling in love. However, in relationships, changes occur; both partners develop individually, and circumstances may shift due to factors like having children or dealing with illnesses. This requires effort and attention to sustain a healthy relationship, and there's much to learn from this process. It can assist in re-establishing a deeper connection, improving the handling of challenging situations, and rediscovering joy and happiness together.

Mindfulness & Self Compassion

I work with so-called third-generation cognitive therapies, which are attention- and acceptance-oriented therapies. Mindfulness and self-compassion play a significant role in these therapies.

Mindfulness is about being present in the moment and aware of what is happening in your life right now, right where you are. It helps you find more peace and balance and deal with life's challenges with greater ease.

Self-compassion means treating yourself in a kind way, in times of difficulty or when you feel bad about yourself, just as you would take care of a good friend.

What others say

"In the first conversation with Nicole I said: I'm in a tough period so a psychologist seemed useful, but what exactly I'm coming to do I don't really know. Just now we had our last conversation of 15 sessions and have completed a very beautiful and valuable journey. One of the eye-openers was when I was allowed to physically put my critical voice on another chair during a conversation, so suddenly there was room for all kinds of emotions I had pushed away and I could finally process an unpleasant event. I also learned how my nervous system, like everyone's, reacts automatically in certain situations through emotions and physical reactions and I learned to embrace this first of all, this alone gave me peace. Nicole also gave me concrete tools with which I can calm myself in such a situation.

What distinguishes Nicole from other therapists is her genuine care, warmth and attention that she shows during the conversations, the gentleness with which she lets you gain insights and also the versatility of the forms of therapy that she flexibly uses during the sessions, depending on the question. I feel I have become a richer person and I would almost stick around for fun." - L.

"During the sessions with Nicole, we tried to uncover deep underlying patterns that initially pushed me toward burnout. Nicole was very patient with me and helped me understand the real causes of my burnout in a non-invasive way.

By the end of our sessions, I felt more in control and more grounded. Now I better understand what upsets me and makes me feel uncomfortable, more than that, I have the tools that can prevent me from feeling this way." - Josip L.

"Thanks to Nicole and her guidance, I feel much more resilient, confident and stable in my life. After an intake in which I felt heard and safe with Nicole, we spent several months introducing ACT and its exercises. Although Nicole presents herself as an ACT therapist, there was also room for more than that. Each session was designed to focus on what I needed at that moment.

When I started therapy, I felt like I was in a deep pit. And the harder I tried and tried my best, the deeper I fell into that pit. Fortunately, I now have a toolkit of methods that make me feel a lot better in my daily life, which focuses on self-acceptance, my personal values and self-awareness." - Laura
