Welcome to Psychology Practice Unfoldings

Practice for Individual and Couples Therapy

What are you looking for?

Sometimes you reach a point in your life where you feel ‘stuck’, so to speak. Maybe you experience stress, sadness, loss or inner turmoil. Maybe you keep running into the same patterns in yourself or in your relationships. You long for peace, direction or more connection - with yourself and with others.

It can be challenging to seek help, especially if you have been struggling with this for a long time. But precisely that desire for change is a first, important step.

As a psychologist, I offer a safe space to explore what is going on and what is being touched.

In couples therapy, I also work with couples who have lost connection or are stuck in patterns of distance and struggle.

My focus is on personal growth, deepening, healing and meaningful connection. In therapy, together we will search for space, recovery and direction - so you can reconnect with what really matters in your life.

My Vision

My way of working is personal, engaging and tailored to who you are. I believe a real conversation starts with good listening.

I myself have experienced how life can challenge, unsettle and change us - sometimes unexpectedly, sometimes gradually. It can then be difficult to still feel in touch with yourself, or to trust your own strength. Emotions can become overwhelming, your head gets full, and critical thoughts or inner uncertainty take over. External circumstances such as health problems, relationship conflicts or stress at work can also throw you off balance.

In couples therapy, I help you get back in touch with who you really are and what you deeply desire. Whether it is trauma, loss, depression, anxiety or a deeper search for meaning, I work with attention to your pace, your story and your potential for growth.

I work with couples who long for restoration of connection, mutual understanding, emotional safety and simply fun again. During sessions, we create space for genuine encounter, where feelings are allowed to be shared again and connection can be restored.

My vision is rooted in the trust that every person, no matter what you have been through, can reconnect - with yourself, with others and with life itself. If you are willing to search for this, therapy can be a place where this movement begins.

Methods

In Individual Therapy, together we look at what hinders you from living freely and in connection. I work with various methods, including Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), EMDR and polyvagal theory. These forms of therapy help you make space for difficult feelings, process old pain and reconnect with yourself. Themes people come to me with include (childhood) trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, burn-out, sleep problems and questions about meaning or identity.

In Couples Therapy, I work with couples who have lost contact with each other or long for more openness and understanding. We explore what lies beneath the conflicts and work on restoring emotional safety. I use IMAGO therapy and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Both forms of therapy help to really meet each other again.

Whether you come alone or with your partner, my work focuses on restoring connection - with yourself, with the other and with what is of value to you.

For more information on these methods, see the Individual Therapy and Couples Therapy  pages.

How to start

The first contact starts with an intake session. During this session, we look together at what is going on in your relationship, what you are struggling with and what your desire is: what do you want to do differently, and where do you want to go? I listen without judgement and offer a safe space in which you are both heard. A sense of trust and a good click are important to start working together openly.

Before the intake, I send you an intake form. If it is possible to share this with each other, it helps to start in a goal-oriented way.

In the sessions, you actively start working - with each other and with yourself. This is done not only through conversations, but also through exercises that help you to understand each other again, feel your emotions and reconnect. Between sessions, you may receive assignments or reflections to help you apply what happens in the session to your daily life.

Relationship therapy takes place in an atmosphere of trust. Everything discussed during the sessions is confidential. What is shared remains between you, unless you both choose to deal with it differently.

How long therapy takes cannot be predicted in advance. It depends on your goals, commitment and intention. On average, eight sessions are a good starting point, and you always keep control over the pace and length of the process.

You can pay per session, or opt for a six-session program. You can easily schedule appointments yourself via the link below to my online calendar, at times that suit you.

What others say

"In the first conversation with Nicole I said: I'm in a tough period so a psychologist seemed useful, but what exactly I'm coming to do I don't really know. Just now we had our last conversation of 15 sessions and have completed a very beautiful and valuable journey. One of the eye-openers was when I was allowed to physically put my critical voice on another chair during a conversation, so suddenly there was room for all kinds of emotions I had pushed away and I could finally process an unpleasant event. I also learned how my nervous system, like everyone's, reacts automatically in certain situations through emotions and physical reactions and I learned to embrace this first of all, this alone gave me peace. Nicole also gave me concrete tools with which I can calm myself in such a situation.

What distinguishes Nicole from other therapists is her genuine care, warmth and attention that she shows during the conversations, the gentleness with which she lets you gain insights and also the versatility of the forms of therapy that she flexibly uses during the sessions, depending on the question. I feel I have become a richer person and I would almost stick around for fun." - L.

"During the sessions with Nicole, we tried to uncover deep underlying patterns that initially pushed me toward burnout. Nicole was very patient with me and helped me understand the real causes of my burnout in a non-invasive way.

By the end of our sessions, I felt more in control and more grounded. Now I better understand what upsets me and makes me feel uncomfortable, more than that, I have the tools that can prevent me from feeling this way." - Josip L.

"Thanks to Nicole and her guidance, I feel much more resilient, confident and stable in my life. After an intake in which I felt heard and safe with Nicole, we spent several months introducing ACT and its exercises. Although Nicole presents herself as an ACT therapist, there was also room for more than that. Each session was designed to focus on what I needed at that moment.

When I started therapy, I felt like I was in a deep pit. And the harder I tried and tried my best, the deeper I fell into that pit. Fortunately, I now have a toolkit of methods that make me feel a lot better in my daily life, which focuses on self-acceptance, my personal values and self-awareness." - Laura

About me

My name is Nicole Flinterman, psychologist NIP. In my practice, I offer individual therapy and couples therapy, both online and on location, in Dutch and English.

My way of working is personal, involved and tailored to who you are. I use methods that I believe in and are evidence-based. I also work with tools from other techniques, such as polyvagal theory, psychodrama, compassionate interviewing, positive psychology, schema therapy and family constellations.

I am also further trained as a Mindfulness and Self-Compassion trainer. From this background, I also draw my personal grounding in my work. I have a daily meditation practice, which I find very supportive in practicing my profession as a therapist.

Furthermore, I regularly further develop myself with new therapy forms and skills that I can use, and I take care of my personal and professional development by following supervision and peer-review.
